Day at the Dacha
Photos of a country cottage (dacha) in the vicinity of St Petersburg, Russia. The countryside around St Petersburg is dotted with communities of dachas, or country cottages. We caught a train into the country, and got of at a station, romantically called "106 KM". Within walking distance of this station is approximately 16,000 cottages. Each one belongs to a family, who spends most of the summer there. Each garden is planted thick with cropping plants: flowers, fruits and vegetables; and each house is built to a simple design, without constraints of plannning regulations. Olga's parent's dacha is a typical one, each section of the house is added as it can be afforded. The access to the upstairs sleeping area is a set of rails set in the wall, and a hole in the ceiling. The garden is planted with a huge crop of fruits and vegetables, including some varieties of berries that I have never seen before. They looked to be yellow and red gooseberries.Back to Saint Petersburg
